  Vanessa and Andrew were AMAZING! I am a new homeowner in Calgary and I called Vanessa in a panic when we accidentally drilled into our water line. Vanessa not only talked me off a ledge, but she also set me up with a plumber right away.   I just purchased an older home with all original plumbing. None of the faucets were working, toilets needed replacement, clogged drains, destroyed shower valve and so on. I started searching for a contractor in an urge and among the other companies I decided to give CalgaryPlumberanddrains a try. Andrew and Darren showed up instantly, checked everything and provided a very reasonable estimate compared to the others. Nevertheless, it was still a bit above my budget. Andrew did his best to reduce overall costs by shopping around for me. In two days I got everything replaced. The guys were professional, and this hard job was done for me ASAP. I also would like to thank Yaroslav for checking my cast iron sewer pipeline with a camera. Very satisfied with the services and definitely would recommend this contractor and will call them again as I need to further renovate my plumbing.

  I was fortunate to be introduced to Andrew through my neighborhood handyman who contacted Calgary Plumber and Drains on my behalf.  Andrew called me within a day and was at my house the next to assess the problem.  He was totally professional, taking his time to thoroughly examine the stack pipe and the damage that the leak caused.  I so appreciated his full disclosure of the "worst case scenario" and what action had to be taken.  Andrew and Darren (sp?) arrived at my home a few days later to tackle the issues, which were extensive given I live in a five level home.  Throughout the repairs both Andrew and Darren were super personable and given the tight, confined spaces they had to work in, remained in excellent humor and gave me updates as they worked.  Several feet of stack pipe had to be replaced over several levels, as well as the installation of a new hot water tank and the removal of an antiquated water softener.   This was not a pretty job!!  They worked diligently and respectively in my home and even put up with my pooch trying to help out!!  The clean up was great - one wouldn't even know what transpired after they left.  Going forward I will definitely utilize Calgary Plumber and Drains for any future plumbing needs I may have.  My only regret is that I wasn't made aware of Andrew & Darren years ago!!   My hot water heater broke down and started leaking at midnight during a cold snap, which isn’t ideal especially with a newborn. After calling multiple companies, Andrew was the first to answer and asked me to take pictures to access the damage and provided me with an estimate. He came in that day and installed a new hot water tank, answered all my questions and within 24 hours I had hot water working again. What is the difference between Poly B & PEX water lines?

Poly B, also referred to as Polybutylene, is a flexible grey pipe used in hot water systems and residential plumbing. It was manufactured and used frequently in homes between 1985 and 1997 because of its flexibility, low cost, and ease of installation. However, it has a reputation for being notoriously problematic and has since been discontinued. PEX, on the other hand, is made from HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) and is a long-lasting alternative. It is also durable, cost-effective, non-toxic, resists freezing damage, and doesn’t corrode from the inside.

Why should I replace my Poly B pipes?

Despite it being approved by the Canadian Standards Association, after 10 to 15years, Poly B pipes tend to break down. Problems can include hairline cracks and leaks at fittings, bends and when installed near high-heat areas, such as hot water tanks. Exposure to high water pressure levels can also cause leaks. Poly B pipe failure can cause extensive damages to your property, so it is advisable to change them to a copper alternative or PEX pipes as soon as possible.

How much does it cost to replace Poly B pipes?

The cost of the replacement depends on the size of your home, the number of pipes that require replacement and the cost of the new pipes. On average, the price ranges between $6,000 and $12000, to change out the Poly B with new PEX piping, and an additional $5,000 to $10,000 for the drywall to be repaired. The job takes about 4-5 business days for the replacement and another 7-8 business days for the drywall work. It is advisable not to hire anyone that quotes less than the standard rate, as they might make cuts elsewhere.
